TATE Engineering, Chemical (ACD/UTSA Calculus Ready) - AS to BS - The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) 2020-2021


The Alamo Colleges District (ACD) and The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) have partnered together to offer students a seamless transfer pathway to earn a four-year degree in engineering from UTSA’s College of Engineering.

ACD engineering students can participate in the UTSA Transfer Academy for Tomorrow’s Engineers (TATE) program, where students will be co-enrolled at both institutions, and can take specific engineering courses taught by UTSA faculty at Northwest Vista College. Upon completion of the program, students will transfer to UTSA to obtain their bachelor’s degree in any of the six UTSA engineering degree programs.  This transfer advising guide is specific to Chemical Engineering.

Lower Division Requirements at the Alamo Colleges District for an AS degree


The courses in this section meet the requirements for an Associate of Science degree. The Graduation section in any catalog of the colleges in the Alamo Colleges District lists additional Degree/Certificate Requirements.

Applicable Transfer Credit Hours


This Transfer Advising Guide provides 65 college-level hours, of which 61 will transfer and apply, as EDUC 1300 and 1 SCH of ENGR 1201 will transfer but will NOT be applicable towards the baccalureate degree degree in Chemical Engineering.

Note: UTSA accepts a maximum of 66 college-level hours in transfer towards a baccalaureate degree. Students must complete the specified number of advanced credits and credits in residence for their degrees.

Note: UTSA requires students to take both MATH 2318 AND MATH 2320 prior to transferring, in order to recieve credit for EGR 2323 at UTSA.

Note: For the Alamo Colleges District this transfer advising guide is degree complete for an Associate of Science, but NOT core complete and NOT field of study complete.

Course Requirements at UTSA for completion of BS in Chemical Engineering


The courses in this section meet the requirements for a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering.  Be advised these course requirements must be completed at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA).

  • CHE 2603 - Organic Chemistry I (grade must be a “C-” or better)
  • CHE 2612 - Organic Chemistry Laboratory I (grade must be a “C-” or better)
  • CME 2103 - Chemistry Process Principles (grade must be a “C-” or better)
  • STA 2303 - Applied Probability & Statistics for Engineers (grade must be a “C-” or better)

Semester VII


  • CHE 3643 - Organic Chemistry II (grade must be a “C-” or better)
  • CME 2301 - Chemical Process Safety and Risk Management. (grade must be a “C-” or better)
  • CME 2203 - Computational Methods in Chemical Engineering (grade must be a “C-” or better)
  • EGR 3323 - Applied Engineering Analysis II (grade must be a “C-” or better)
  • Select one course from the UTSA Component Area Option (90) Core

Semester VIII


  • CHE 3804- Physical Chemistry I and Laboratory (grade must be a “C-” or better)

This Transfer Advising Guide provides 132 college-level hours, of which 128 will apply towards the UTSA degree requirements, as EDUC 1300 and 1 SCH of ENGR 1201 will transfer but will NOT be applicable towards the UTSA baccalaureate degree in Chemical Engineering.

Note: UTSA requires 128 college-level hours towards a baccalaureate degree in Chemical Engineering.

UTSA Distinguished Transfer Scholarship


Fall and spring transfer applicants who are transferring 24-66 credit hours and get admitted to UTSA by the Distinguished Transfer Scholarship priority deadline will be given automatic consideration for this scholarship valued up to $6,000* for up to two years or four semesters if renewal eligibility is maintained. The value is awarded on a competitive basis.

This scholarship is competitive so out-of-state and international students can receive a Competitive Scholarship Waiver and pay in-state tuition for every year they hold a competitive scholarship of at least $1,000.

AS Approved Course Requirements

The Associate of Science (AS) is designed to align closely with the first half of a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree.  Students should follow the pre-major AS to BS Transfer Advising Guide for the major and university selected.  The Transfer Advising Guides are developed in conjunction with the senior institution to which the student plans to transfer.

To be awarded the AS degree at one of the colleges in the Alamo Colleges District, students must have 9 hours of AS Approved Course Requirements not included in the 42 hours of Core Curriculum.  Please check with your advisor for assistance.

Students pursuing this degree at UTSA must successfully complete each of the Gateway Courses with a grade of “C” or better in no more than two attempts.  A student who is unable to successfully complete these courses within two attempts, including dropping a course with a grade of “W” or taking an equivalent course at another institution (including any colleges of the Alamo Colleges District), will not be allowed to select this major at UTSA.

The Field of Study (FOS) curriculum for Chemical Engineering is for students who are seeking a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree with a major in Chemical Engineering.  The field of study curriculum has been approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).

Special Admission Requirements for UTSA TATE Program


In order to be considered for the UTSA Transfer Academy for Tomorrow’s Engineers (TATE) program a student must meet the following:

  • Be admitted to Alamo Colleges
  • Be a first-time-in-college or continuing student at Alamo Colleges  (Note:  Continuing students must have at least a 2.5 GPA)
  • Met in all areas of the Texas Success Initiative (TSI)
  • Be eligible to enroll in MATH 2413 Calculus I (calculus-ready)
  • Express their interest in the TATE program by completing the TATE application
  • Once accepted to the TATE program students must enroll in a minimum of 12 semester credit hours (SCH) each fall and spring semester
  • Students must satisfactorily complete the TATE requirements within a year

Special Admission Requirements for UTSA College of Engineering


Admission to the College of Engineering

Transfer Students

Transfer requirements for direct admission to the College of Engineering for students who have earned 12 or more transferable semester credit hours:

  • meet all UTSA undergraduate transfer admission requirements, and
  • have completed MAT 1214 Calculus I and WRC 1013 Freshman Composition I, or the equivalents, with grades of “C-” or better, and
  • meet grade point average requirements:
  1. applicants with a transfer grade point average of 3.00 or higher may be granted direct admission to the College, or
  2. applicants with a transfer grade point average below 3.00 may be granted admission to the College by ­committee review.

Applicants who do not meet College of Engineering admission requirements will be admitted to the Engineering, Math, and Sciences Studies in the University College. Students have three semesters to complete Calculus I with a grade of “C-” or better and meet the COE Transfer Requirements.

Things to do and remember upon Admission to UTSA:

  • Make an appointment with the academic advisor of the major, once accepted to UTSA, in order to clarify department, college and university policies and procedures, to review course sequencing and to help with identifying resources for academic success.   • Refer to the official source of information on specific courses within the UTSA requirements for this degree plan from the UTSA Undergraduate Catalog or visit the web site at www.utsa.edu.

  • Pay close attention to course sequencing and availability at UTSA as it will affect the time it takes to complete the degree program.

This Transfer Advising Guide represents UTSA’s degree plan and is subject to change at the university’s discretion. It is intended for advising purposes only so students know exactly which courses they can take at any of the colleges in the Alamo Colleges District and have the courses count towards degree requirements when they transfer to UTSA. The Alamo Colleges District Advising
