Texas Transfer Framework: Field of Study Curriculum (FOSC) Information

Field of Study Curriculum (FOSC) is a set of courses that fulfill lower-division (freshman and sophomore) requirements for a specific major/degree plan in addition to the core curriculum. FOSCs are guaranteed to transfer to any public college or university in Texas.

The Fields of Study now part of Texas Direct.  What is Texas Direct? Texas Direct is the state’s effort to articulate seamless degree pathways between two- and four-year institutions.

Students who complete the Texas Core Curriculum and Field of Study at any public two-year institution automatically qualify to receive an associate degree - the Texas Direct Transfer Degree. They are also qualified to transfer their courses as a block applied directly to their selected major.

Special Admission Requirements for Texas State University Social Work Program

Texas State University BSW Admissions

The Social Work curriculum is based on and interwoven with the general education core curriculum consisting of 57 semester credit hours, and 6 hours in supportive Social Sciences. Students progress in three phases of the Social Work major, without regard to disability. A social worker must be emotionally and behaviorally stable, must have strong communication skills, must have solid interpersonal relationship-building skills, and must conform to professional ethics. The School of Social Work faculty evaluates whether students meet these criteria and may advise a student at any point to continue in the B.S.W. major or consider another major.

Phase I (Pre-Social Work Major)

Social work pre-majors should complete most of their general education core/liberal arts courses before applying for admission to Phase II of the social work major. To be eligible to apply, students must complete at least 45 credit hours, including the following: COMM 1310, ENG 1310 and 1320; MATH 1315, 1316 or 1319; PHIL 1305 or 1320; ENG 3303; SOWK 1350 and 2375; Any 6 credit hours of core 030 Life & Physical Science courses; HIST 1310, 2327 or 2381; HIST 1320, 2328 or 2382; and US 1100, if required. Applicants must complete ENG 3303, SOWK 1350 & SOWK 2375 with a C or above. Phase II applicants must have a GPA of at least 2.50 overall.

Phase II (Social Work Major)

Applicants for Phase II submit a formal application. An admissions committee screens applicants, considering the student’s academic record and suitability for social work practice, and informs applicants in writing if they are admitted, conditionally admitted, or denied admission. When the student is admitted into Phase II of the BSW degree program, his/her formal academic major is converted from Pre-Social Work to Social Work.

Admission into Phase II does not guarantee success in the BSW degree program. School of Social Work (SSW) faculty continually assess students’ progress; majors must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA overall and earn a ‘C’ or higher in every social work and supportive social science course. Faculty also expect students to adhere to the social work professional Code of Ethics, show emotional and mental stability, demonstrate strong communication skills, develop working interpersonal relationships, and develop self-awareness. For more information, please reference the Evaluation of Student Fitness and Performance Policy.

The Alamo Colleges District Advising

Students are encouraged to consult with an academic advisor about courses and other educational concerns if they plan to pursue a two-year degree program, transfer to another college or university, or simply take a few selected courses. In addition to course and degree requirements, policies and procedures are subject to change; stay informed by meeting with an academic advisor regularly.

Many students who plan to transfer to a university are advised to fulfill the lower-division requirements for the university.
