Lower Division Requirements at the Alamo Colleges District for an AA degree


The courses in this section meet the requirements for an Associate of Arts degree. The Graduation section in any catalog of the colleges in the Alamo Colleges District lists additional Degree/Certificate Requirements.

Applicable Transfer Credit Hours


This Transfer Advising Guide provides 72 college-level hours, of which 66 will transfer and apply as EDUC 1300 and ARCH 1308 will transfer but will NOT be applicable towards the UTSA baccalaureate degree in Architecture.

Note: UTSA accepts a maximum of 66 college-level hours in transfer towards a baccalaureate degree.  Students must complete the specified number of advanced credits and credits in residence for their degrees.

Note: For the Alamo Colleges District this transfer advising guide is degree complete but NOT core complete.

Alamo Promise to UTSA Bold Promise - University of Texas at San Antonio


Promise-to-Promise

AlamoPROMISE is a program that covers the full cost of tuition and required fees for new graduates from participating high schools seeking an academic certificate or associate degree at one of the five Alamo Colleges.

Promise to Promise allows eligible students to start at any of the five Alamo Colleges and then transfer to UTSA to complete a four-year degree while having educational costs covered at both institutions.

The Promise-to-Promise program encourages Alamo Colleges students who meet certain eligibility criteria to transfer to UTSA and have tuition and mandatory fees covered for up to four consecutive fall and spring semesters through the UTSA Bold Promise program.

AlamoPROMISE to UTSA Bold Promise

The AlamoPROMISE to UTSA Bold Promise is a tuition promise program that aims to make college more accessible and affordable to AlamoPROMISE students who transfer to UTSA and meet certain eligibility criteria. Qualifying students will have their tuition and mandatory fees covered 100% for four fall and spring semesters within a 2-year time period, as long as students maintain eligibility.

How does it work?

Students do not have to apply separately for this program. Bold Promise is automatically awarded to qualified Texas residents who meet the program qualifications. Tuition and mandatory fees are covered by scholarships, grants and tuition exemptions from federal, state and institutional funds.

** Students who meet all eligibility criteria will be covered by Bold Promise up to the available unmet financial need. For an explanation of unmet need please refer to our FAQs section**

Students will not see a fund called “Bold Promise” on their financial aid offer, but a combination of funding awarded that covers tuition and mandatory fees. Note: Bold Promise does not cover books, housing or meal plan. However, students will have other aid offered to help with these expenses.

How do I qualify?

Students must have successfully completed the AlamoPROMISE Program and meet the following qualifications:

  • Have a family income up to $70,000*

  • Submit a FAFSA/TASFA by May 1 (admitted for Fall) or November 1 (admitted for Spring)

  • Minimum GPA of 3.2 with no course repeats, or minimum GPA of 3.25 regardless of course repeats

  • Complete an Associate’s Degree and enroll at UTSA the following fall or spring semester

  • Enroll at UTSA full-time (12 hours or more) for fall or spring semester

Note: Students in an online only program are ineligible for Bold Promise.
*Students must have financial need. Family income information will be determined from the FAFSA/TASFA.

Continuing Eligibility

To continue to receive the Bold Promise, students must meet the following eligibility qualifications.

  • Submit a FAFSA or TASFA by January 15 each year
  • Maintain a 2.5 GPA
  • Enroll full-time (12 credit hours or more) each fall and spring semester to complete a minimum of 24 hours
  • Remain in good academic standing

UTSA Distinguished Transfer Scholarship


Fall and spring transfer applicants who are transferring at least 24 semester credit hours of academic coursework (dual credit and work in progress not included) at the time of admission will be given automatic consideration based on academic credit.   This scholarship is valued up to $6,000 (1,500 each semester) for up to four consecutive semesters (not including summers) if renewal eligibility is maintained. The value is awarded on a competitive basis, while funding is still available. 

Deadline to be considered for the Distinguished Transfer Scholarship:

  • Fall transfers must be admitted by May 1
  • Spring transfers must be admitted by October 15

Students pursuing this degree at UTSA must successfully complete each of the Gateway Courses with a grade of “C” or better in no more than two attempts.  A student who is unable to successfully complete these courses within two attempts, including dropping a course with a grade of “W” or taking an equivalent course at another institution (including any colleges of the Alamo Colleges District), will not be allowed to select this major at UTSA.

Special Admission Requirements for UTSA Architecture


Admission Criteria for Transfer Students

Students who wish to transfer from another institution into either of the two undergraduate degree programs (Architecture or Interior Design) in the School of Architecture and Planning are required to submit an application package that includes their cumulative grade point average, and a letter of interest.  

Transfer students with less than 30 transferable semester credit hours must:  

  • meet all UTSA undergraduate transfer admission requirements, and  
  • have a minimum transfer grade point average (GPA) of 3.0.  

Transfer students with 30 or more transferable semester credit hours must:  

  • meet all UTSA undergraduate transfer admission requirements,  
  • have a minimum transfer GPA of 3.0, and  
  • go through a portfolio review.  

Students with architecture or interior design coursework are required to submit a portfolio of studio work (maximum size 8.5 inches by 11 inches) until April 15th that will be used for studio placement. Students wishing to apply for transfer course substitutions will be required to submit course syllabi for those courses for School review. Application packages and portfolios should be sent directly to the School of Architecture and Planning. Transfer applicants placed into the first year will be required to complete the Foundation Year Program and apply for either the Architecture or Interior Design major as described below.  

Freshmen students who do not meet the above requirements but meet UTSA’s general admission requirements will be part of “Exploratory Studies” where students will be able to work towards meeting the prerequisites needed to declare Architecture or Interior Design as their major.  

Transfer students who do not meet the above requirements, but meet UTSA’s general admission requirements will be placed in Multidisciplinary Studies where students will be able to work towards a bachelor’s degree.

Things to do and remember upon Admission to UTSA:

  • Make an appointment with the academic advisor of the major, once accepted to UTSA, in order to clarify department, college and university policies and procedures, to review course sequencing and to help with identifying resources for academic success.   • Refer to the official source of information on specific courses within the UTSA requirements for this degree plan from the UTSA 2022-2024 Undergraduate Catalog or visit the web site at www.utsa.edu.
  • Information on Gateway Courses can be found at http://www.utsa.edu/registrar/students/gateway.html.
  • Pay close attention to course sequencing and availability at UTSA as it will affect the time it takes to complete the degree program.

This Transfer Advising Guide represents UTSA’s degree plan and is subject to change at the university’s discretion. It is intended for advising purposes only so students know exactly which courses they can take at any of the colleges in the Alamo Colleges District and have the courses count towards degree requirements when they transfer to UTSA. It is highly recommended that students meet with their assigned academic advisor to review all graduation and transfer requirements listed in the Transfer Advising Guide.

The ultimate goal is to provide students with accurate information for transfer pathways while minimizing loss of credits in transfer. Students are encouraged to review UTSA’s requirements frequently.

The Alamo Colleges District Advising


Students are encouraged to consult with an academic advisor about courses and other educational concerns if they plan to pursue a two-year degree program, transfer to another college or university, or simply take a few selected courses. In addition to course and degree requirements, policies and procedures are subject to change; stay informed by meeting with an academic advisor regularly.

Many students who plan to transfer to a university are advised to fulfill the lower-division requirements for the university.
