Lower Division Requirements at the Alamo Colleges District for an AS degree


The courses in this section meet the requirements for an Associate of Science degree. The Graduation section in any catalog of the colleges in the Alamo Colleges District lists additional Degree/Certificate Requirements.

  • Select one course from the Creative Arts (50) Core  will transfer as Texas Core Curriculum Creative Arts (50) Core
  • Select one course from the American History (60) Core  will transfer as Texas Core Curriculum American History (60) Core

  • Select either  GOVT 2305 - Federal Government or GOVT 2306 Texas Government  will transfer as GOVT 2305 or GOVT 2306 [Texas Core Curriculum Government/Political Science (70) Core]
  • Select 4 SCH of either BIOL or CHEM or PHYS will transfer as UTHSA Additional Program Prerequisite [See Note in “Applicable Transfer Credit Hours”section]
  • Select one course from the Additional Communication (90) Core  will transfer as Texas Core Curriculum Component Area Option (90) Core [UTHSA Additional Program Prerequistie]
  • Select one course from the Additional Language, Philosophy and Culture (90) Core  will transfer as Texas Core Curriculum Component Area Option (90) Core, but will NOT be UTHSA degree applicable

This Transfer Advising Guide provides 63 college-level hours, of which 57 will transfer and apply, as EDUC 1300 and 3 SCH of Additional LPC (90) Core will transfer but will NOT be applicable towards the University of Texas Health San Antonio baccalaureate degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences.

Note: University of Texas Health San Antonio accepts a maximum of 66 college-level hours in transfer towards a baccalaureate degree. Students must complete the specified number of advanced credits and credits in residence for their degrees. 

Note: University of Texas Health San Antonio requires that all transfer courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better.

Note: University of Texas Health San Antonio states “Students are strongly encouraged to have taken courses in Genetics and Statistics to satisfy their elective prerequisites.” BIOL 2416 - Genetics would suffice this degree requirement for UTHSA. 

Note: For the Alamo Colleges District this transfer advising guide is core complete and degree complete.

Special Admission Requirement for University of Texas Health San Antonio


Applications for the MLS program are accepted between January and mid-June for the incoming class. All application materials, the application fee, official transcripts and all supporting documents must be received by Allied Health Centralized Application System (AHCAS) by the deadline. Applicants who are enrolled in college courses at the time of application should submit an official transcript showing courses in progress. An official, updated transcript must be submitted upon completion of the courses.

Bachelor of Science in MLS applicants must complete the Texas Core Curriculum (42 hours) and prerequisite courses with a grade of “C” or better. Certain prerequisite courses will apply towards meeting the Texas Core requirements:

Additional MLS program requirements:

  • Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Minimum science GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Completion of the online Allied Health Centralized Application System (AHCAS)
  • Payment of non-refundable application fee for using the AHCAS application
  • Submission of the following documents to the AHCAS or Office of the University Registrar:
    • Official transcripts from each college and university currently or previously attended. Applicants who are enrolled in college courses at the time of application should submit an official transcript showing courses in progress. An updated transcript must be submitted upon completion of the courses. Note: Transfer credits indicated on another school’s transcript are not accepted in lieu of submitting the original institution record for that coursework. Transcripts from institutions outside the United States must be submitted in the original language and must be accompanied by a NACES Members evaluation agency English translation (course by course).
    • Completion of the two personal essay questions.
  • International Applicants only:

    Applicants from countries where English is not the official language are required to submit scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Duolingo English Test. The minimum required scores are: TOEFL 84, IELTS   7.0 or Duolingo115

    Scores on TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo tests taken more than two years prior to the date of application are not acceptable.

Required Documents (if you are accepted) to the Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences program:

If you are made an official offer for the Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences (BSMLS) program, all of the following items are required prior to matriculation:

  • Non-refundable SHP Tuition Deposit to secure each student’s seat for the BS MLS class. Directions for this process will be sent to accepted students.
  • Completion of a criminal background check. Directions for this process will be sent to accepted students.
  • Completion of student drug testing. Directions for this process will be sent to accepted students.
  • Student Immunization Record:  All enrolled students at the health science center are required to be fully immunized with required immunizations prior to orientation and registration. Additional information is available on the Wellness 360 website.
  • Final updated transcripts must be submitted upon completion of courses from each college/university to the Office of University Registrar. All foreign transcripts must be also sent to include the original transcript and the NACES evaluated official transcript (course by course).

  • Evidence of current health insurance showing dates of coverage. Unless proof of proper insurance coverage is provided before the first day of class, students will be charged for a health insurance policy through the university. The fee for this policy is non-removable once the payment due date passes and is non-refundable once paid.

  • Make an appointment with the academic advisor of the major, once accepted to the University of Texas Health San Antonio, in order to clarify department, college and university policies and procedures, to review course sequencing and to help with identifying resources for academic success.   • Refer to the official source of information on specific courses within the University of Texas Health San Antonio requirements for this degree plan from the University of Texas Health San Antonio’s Undergraduate Catalog.
  • Pay close attention to course sequencing and availability at the University of Texas Health San Antonio as it will affect the time it takes to complete the degree program.
