Special Admission for Nursing B.S.N. at the University of the Incarnate Word

Traditional (Generic) Pathway Admissions and Degree Requirements:

The traditional pathway prepares graduates to take the licensure examination to become a registered nurse. Courses are offered on the main campus and are primarily daytime classes.

Students may be admitted to the nursing program through the regular application process each semester or through the direct admissions option for first-time freshman, by invitation only. The Direct Admissions Program is for first-time freshman by invitation only.

Admission Requirements: Traditional (Generic) Program

  1. Applicants must have been accepted to the University of the Incarnate Word for Fall semester admissions by February 1st and Spring semester admissions by July 1st.
  2. Applications to the nursing program must be completed as directed by the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing at http://www.uiw.edu/nursing/bsn/traditionalapply.html.  Additional information about immunization requirements, admissions testing schedules, etc. may be obtained from the SON office (210-283-5094).
  3. In order to be reviewed, the nursing program application must be completed through the Nursing’s Centralized Application Service (NursingCAS) by the February 1st (or July 1st) deadline. The applicant must have:
    1. Submitted an immunization record that shows completion of required immunizations.
    2. Submitted official copies of transcripts of all schools attended.
    3. Submitted record of current enrollment.
    4. Acknowledged and agreed to complete criminal background screen when directed by the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing.
    5. Completed a designated admissions test (refer to website for specific test).
  4. By February 1 (or July 1), in order to be considered for admission, the applicant must have completed (with a minimum grade of C) or be currently enrolled in all courses designated as prerequisite to admission:
    • Dimensions of Wellness (transfer students may complete upon admission during their first semester at UIW).
    • English Composition I and II (prior bachelor’s degree exempt)
    • Speech (prior bachelor’s degree exempt)

  5. Admission to the nursing program may be limited based on the availability of qualified faculty and clinical practice sites. Acceptance is primarily based on academic performance. The applicant’s overall academic record is considered in admission decisions. Criteria include:
    1. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 in all course work to date. More favorable consideration will be given to applicants with higher GPAs and to those who passed courses the first time taken.
    2. A minimum GPA of 2.5 in science courses. This includes all biology, chemistry and nutrition courses.
    3. Scores on the standardized nursing entrance test are also considered in admission decisions.

Fulfillment of these minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Students must also have completed the designated prerequisite courses, the designated health requirements and a background check in order to enroll in the program. If applicable, students must have received a declaratory order from the Texas BON.

Students applying to transfer from another baccalaureate nursing program must satisfy the same prerequisite course work as do all other applicants. Students must also meet the same standards for progression as do students enrolled in the UIW nursing program. This means that applicants must be in good academic standing and eligible to continue in the original nursing program. Prior nursing course work will be evaluated for equivalency with the UIW curriculum. Placement in the program will be determined on an individual basis and placement is subject to available space in the program.

Using this Transfer Advising Guide with the University of the Incarnate Word

This Transfer Advising Guide represents the University of the Incarnate Word degree plan and is subject to change at the university’s discretion. It is intended for advising purposes only so students know exactly which courses they can take at any of the colleges in the Alamo Colleges District and have the courses count towards degree requirements when they transfer to the University of the Incarnate Word. It is highly recommended that students meet with their assigned advisor to review all graduation and transfer requirements listed in the Transfer Advising Guide.

The ultimate goal is to provide students with accurate information for transfer pathways while minimizing loss of credits in transfer. Students are encouraged to review the University of the Incarnate Word’s requirements frequently.

Course numbers in italics are the University of the Incarnate Word’s course numbers.

This Transfer Advising Guide is based upon the University of the Incarnate Word’s 2017-2018 catalog and is subject to change.

The Alamo Colleges District Advising

Students are encouraged to consult with an academic advisor about courses and other educational concerns if they plan to pursue a two-year degree program, transfer to another college or university, or simply take a few selected courses. In addition to course and degree requirements, policies and procedures are subject to change; stay informed by meeting with an academic advisor regularly.

Many students who plan to transfer to a university are advised to fulfill the lower-division requirements for the university. With appropriate planning, your Alamo Colleges District team can help make the transfer experience a seamless process. It is the responsibility of all students to ensure that they take courses at the Alamo Colleges District that will be accepted by the senior institutions they wish to attend.
