This Transfer Advising Guide provides 74 college-level hours, of which 64 will transfer and apply as EDUC 1300, MATH 2412, 1 SCH of FL 1411, 1 SCH of FL 1412 and 1 SCH of KINE will transfer but will NOT be applicable towards the University of the Incarnate Word baccalaureate degree in Rehabilitative Sciences. 

Note: The University of the Incarnate Word does not have a maximum number of college-level transfer hours accepted towards a baccalaureate degree.  Students must complete the specified number of advanced credits and credits in residence for their degrees.

Note: For the Alamo Colleges District this transfer advising guide is NOT core complete and NOT degree complete.  Students will need 3 SCH of American History (60) Core and 6 SCH of Government/Political Science (70) Core for an Associate of Science degree.

Special Admission for Rehabilitative Sciences at the University of the Incarnate Word


The Bachelor of Science degree in Rehabilitative Science is designed to be the pathway for students seeking to go into professional graduate programs in athletic training, physical therapy, medical school and physician assistant areas. The curriculum structure and content gives the graduate a strong foundation and credentials to embark on other careers in advanced healthcare settings or to enter the workforce as entry-level technicians in healthcare settings.

The degree plan includes a choice of four concentrations:  Pre-Athletic Training, Pre-Physical Therapy, Pre-Medicine, and Pre-Physician Assistant.  Depending on concentration, coursework will include the university core, 32-35 credit hours in rehabilitative science, and science and psychology courses tailored to most common pre-requisites for the respective professional school.  Students interested in pursuing a professional degree in other allied health fields may select a concentration they feel is the most appropriate to their professional goals, and an individualized advising plan may be necessary.  This degree plan was designed to meet the needs of most post-baccalaureate advanced allied health programs in the state of Texas.  In some instances, the individual may need to take additional course work to meet the academic prerequisites for entry into a specific program.  The Pre-Athletic Training and Pre-Physical Therapy concentration coursework meet the requirements for a minor in psychology.

Admission to the Major:

Applicants will apply to the major concentration. Applications to the major are due by September 15th. Applicants work with an assigned advisor and are required to submit a completed application form. External applicants or students not working with an advisor should send application materials to the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions, ATTN: Rehabilitative Sciences, 4301 Broadway, CPO 300, San Antonio, TX 78209.

As part of the application process, the student must submit the following to be considered for entry into the major:

  • A completed application form (found online)
  • Current Health Care Provider CPR
  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended filed with the registrar
  • Completion of a favorable criminal background screening
  • Health and Immunization Packet (Health History, Physical, and Immunizations)
  • Acknowledgement of program Essential Functions
  • A candidate may be required to attend an interview with the selection committee and complete a general knowledge exam.
  • HIPAA/Confidentiality Agreement

To be considered for admission the student must meet the following criteria:

  • Completion of the application with all components
  • Minimum college-level credit and GPA:
    • Pre-Athletic Training:  30 hours of college-level credit with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75.
    • Pre-Medicine:  30 hours of college-level credit with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25.
    • Pre-Physical Therapy:  30 hours of college-level credit with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25.
    • Pre-Physician Assistant:  30 hours of college-level credit with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25.
Promotion/Retention/Graduation Requirements:

Once accepted into the Rehabilitative Sciences major, students will be evaluated each semester to ensure they are meeting the expectations set by the program.  These expectations include:

  1. The student must be in good standing with the university
  2. The student must maintain health and immunization requirements.
  3. The student must maintain a minimum of 3.25 GPA on a 4.0 scale for the Pre-Physical Therapy, Pre-Medicine, and Pre-Physician Assistant tracks.  The student must maintain a minimum of 2.75 GPA on a 4.0 scale for the Pre-Athletic Training track.
  4. The student must pass all major and support coursework with a “C” or better.  All students must achieve a final test average of 75% or better in REHS coursework. Failure to do so will result in failure of the course. Students that fail to meet the above may be placed on either an academic or administrative probationary contract with the program director with a list of dates and expectations or suspended from the program.  Failure to fulfill the probationary contract may result in the student’s dismissal from the program. Students may not fail and/or withdraw from more than 2 REHS courses or they will be removed from the major. An appeal may be granted, and appeal information can be found in the REHS policy and procedure manual (available in the program director’s office). A maximum of two appeals are allowed.

  • Make an appointment with the academic advisor of the major, once accepted to the University of the Incarnate Word, in order to clarify department, college and university policies and procedures, to review course sequencing and to help with identifying resources for academic success.   • Refer to the official source of information on specific courses within the University of the Incarnate Word requirements for this degree plan from the University of the Incarnate Word Undergraduate Catalog.
  • Pay close attention to course sequencing and availability at the University of the Incarnate Word as it will affect the time it takes to complete the degree program.

Using this Transfer Advising Guide with the University of the Incarnate Word


This Transfer Advising Guide represents the University of the Incarnate Word degree plan and is subject to change at the university’s discretion. It is intended for advising purposes only so students know exactly which courses they can take at any of the colleges in the Alamo Colleges District and have the courses count towards degree requirements when they transfer to the University of the Incarnate Word. It is highly recommended that students meet with their assigned advisor to review all graduation and transfer requirements listed in the Transfer Advising Guide.

The ultimate goal is to provide students with accurate information for transfer pathways while minimizing loss of credits in transfer. Students are encouraged to review the University of the Incarnate Word’s requirements frequently.

Course numbers in italics are the University of the Incarnate Word’s course numbers.

Students are encouraged to consult with an academic advisor about courses and other educational concerns if they plan to pursue a two-year degree program, transfer to another college or university, or simply take a few selected courses. In addition to course and degree requirements, policies and procedures are subject to change; stay informed by meeting with an academic advisor regularly.

Many students who plan to transfer to a university are advised to fulfill the lower-division requirements for the university.
